Michigan Opera: “La Rondine”
From April 19 – 26, Lynne will be performing Giacomo Puccini’s opera La Rondine with the Michigan Opera Theater orchestra, led by Maestro Stephen Mercurio.
In English, La Rondine translates to “The Swallow”. Dr. David DiChiera, General Director of the Michigan Opera Theater, provides a wonderful outline of the story and history of this opera at http://www.michiganopera.org/0708/rondine.html
Mark Stryker of the Detroit Free Press has also written an article that outlines the love story in La Rondine. Stryker’s article also reports how this once-overlooked opera is suddenly becoming recognized as a beautiful, substantial and interesting work: http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article AID=/20080416/ENT04/804160369
MOT’s production of La Rondine is directed by Lofti Mansouri. The cast includes:
- soprano Pamela Armstrong in the role of Magda de Cirvy
- tenor David Pomeroy as Ruggero
- tenor Victor Ryan Robertson as Prunier
The opera will be performed in Italian with English supertitles above the stage.
The Detroit News has a terrific summary of the opera, written by Lawrence B. Johnson, here: Puccini’s Lesser Known La Rondine Grabs Attention
